Think of all the things we've been able to do in this incredible age of the world, all the places we have been, everything we have seen together. If w'd both been born 2000 years ago this would have been a dream...

Story behind the song
A song written for Shirley, who was five thousand miles away at the time. It's all true. There was another verse which never made it; just an image of one evening when we drove frantically up the slopes of Vesuvius, then ran out of breath to the rim of the crater, just to see the sun finally dip into the sea beyond the bay of Naples. For the rest, it's a song for anyone like us. We know where we started from, but not how we got where we are now...
Lyrics
David Kilpatrick © 1997, for Shirley 25 years Some time I think these years with you Must all have been a dream And we have just been sleeping Since we were seventeen We've walked roads built by long-dead kings Drunk water from their sacred springs And heard the song the warm night sings As she flies in on velvet wings As red as vintage wine We've flown above high mountains We've sailed the deepest seas Thrown coins in every fountain And travelled as we pleased And though the world holds much to fear We've never let it venture near But chose the safest course to steer For what is now and what is here Is all we hoped to find I might have lived a warrior When wars were fought with swords I might have been a poet Before men mastered words Two thousand years ago, or ten I might have run this race of men Some other where, some other when But would you (still) have been here then And would you have been mine? Some times I think these years with you Must all have been a dream
