Story behind the song
My dad fought a long battle with Alzheimers and recently passed from the disease. This song is dedicated to all those who suffer from the disease and those who care for their loved ones with the disease!
Lyrics
HE STILL KNOWS MY NAME I got a call from an old friend, he was driving by the homestead. When he saw my dad, wandering down by the tracks. Met ‘em both at the corner store, you’d think he’d never been there before By the look in his eyes, this is happening more all the time. But he looked at me and he cracked a smile, then he called me son Something he ain’t done in quite a while, not a word for the next three miles. Still I thank the Lord above for one more day, he still knows my name. Mama says that he’s just fine, just give him space, give him time. But I know she knows, this is more than just getting old. She still irons his shirt at night, talks about the grand kids like She’s always done, like he knows everyone. She’s a soldier she’s a saint, living for the moments he says Carol, my, You’ve got pretty eyes. Then she thanks the Lord above for one more day, he still knows her name. Don’t seem right that life goes by like a fast train on a cold night. Before you know its come and gone. Just like that you can’t get it back, no it echoes down the line. Like some memory from the past, it’s fading way too fast. Daddy don’t seem scared to me, he don’t say but I believe he knows the score He can’t win this war. He still says his prayers at night, hits his knees and talks just like he’s always done. Like a daddy’s son. He’s a soldier he’s a saint, living for the moments he sees through the fog. He can talk to God. And he thanks the Lord above for one more day. He still knows his name. Don’t seem right that life goes by like a fast train on a cold night. Before you know its come and gone. Just like that you can’t get it back, no it echoes down the line. Like some memory from the past…. Fading way too fast. Got a call from an old friend, he was driving by the homestead. When he saw my dad, down by the tracks. Copyright 2007 Darrin Allen Dale Belnap

This is a beautiful song. My dad passed away with vascular dementia and cancer in october, and I am so more aware of the heartbreak it causes now. Here is a ;link to a cd that is about to be released. It may be interesting to you. I hope it will raise a lot of money for the research into Alzheimers. http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=404427123&blogID=467138906 My condolences to you and your loved ones.
