Tom Paxton meets Jefferson Airplane. Extremely prolific singer songwriter with a wide range of styles from bizarre novelty tunes and surrealistic poetic songs t
With more than 300 songs and counting and for more than 30 years, I have written in a variety of acoustic styles from novelty tunes to love songs to historical ballads to poetic surrealistic songs to retro-acoustic pop. From bizarre to traditional from funny to poignant, whatever style the song is in, the melodies are usually memorable and the lyrics unpredictable. This site will eventually contain rough often first take demos of my entire song catalogue. Many of the earliest songs when I first started writing will of course be shaky. So expect the songs to get better as time goes on. Feel free to come back and browse often as I will constantly be adding songs, one by one in chronological order, starting in 1974. If you are looking for some unusual songs to cover from a little known but unique artist, you have come to the right place. Just e-mail me. If you find a song here that intrigues you, but you don't like a line or two, or you think it needs a bridge, drop me an e-mail and maybe you can earn writer's credit if it gets that song to be recorded or performed.... otherwise just enjoy. You can become a Rob Lincoln fan at no cost to you. I promise that if you keep coming back there will be some real surprises along the way. While mostly acoustic, some original material will veer into folk rock and even 60's pop, but the garage rock and loudest material will also be found in full band arrangement at soundclick.com/abrasiveflowers Eventually some of these 300+ tunes may be rerecorded and make it on to CD, including a novelty CD that would be suitable for Dr. Demento or an historical ballad CD or a political song CD--but until then, this is the only site you can hear most of these songs. (A few of my songs CAN be found on songramp.com/RobLincoln and myspace.com/lessickandlincoln)

Story behind the song
My most recent professionally recorded release has been getting some reviews from people who have no connection to me or my bandmates ---and most of the reviews have been positive. The cd is called About Time and is by Men From When (me, Steve Lessick, and Art Cohen) The most recent review was in the well known British Music Magazine Shindig. Some of the reviewers have taken issue with certain songs but the one song that was positively cited in every one of them has been the CD's lead off track. This song was written in 1997 and is called Jenny McDowell. People seem to like it because of the outstanding harmonies and lead vocal by Steve Lessick as much as for the song itself. I have decided to do a very different version for this project. Bubble Gum roots rock has been replaced by a bluegrass arrangement. Meanwhile if you want to see what Shindig wrote (they did have a couple negative things to say as well) go to: http://reviews.shindig-magazine.com/reviews-jun2008-1.html Other reviews on the cd from other publications are at: http://www.jerseybeat.com/quietcorner.html http://www.eastside-online.org/entertainment/men-from-when-about-time-cd/ To hear the fully produced Men From When version of Jenny McDowell go to www.myspace.com/menfromwhen To buy the CD go to www.cdbaby.com/menfromwhen Mp3 listners gave this a 4.5 out of 5.0... Comments included: "As far as a rock tune this is one of your best...very catchy. You can even tell in this version" "Great classic ala Flying Burito Brothers/Poco song from the seminal Men from WHen album" "The cd version of Jenny McDowell is pretty cool---kinda reminds me of Herman's Hermits or Freddie and the Dreamers." "Wow, how different. Not bad, but I like the rockin’ way better."
Lyrics
Jenny McDowell Half a mile from the railroad tracks near the other side of town Lives the girl with the smoky eyes and the name of jenny McDowell She wakes up every day at six and takes the 7:05 And if she tries hard enough she’ll remember whats inside Jenny McDowell The morning drizzles lazily you can hear the sidewalk sigh Jenny’s walking down the street I can not catch her eye They say that she was happy once before she met the man Who put her in the face she wears and went out on the lam JM A never ending love A plague from Beelzebub As she waits at 6:58 she eats a cinnamon roll And I see the vacant look and the love that took its toll A drop of rain it hits her face and it looks just like a tear My morning paper sags a bit and the sky ain’t getting clear For JM A never ending love A plague from Beelzebub The train is coming round the wire the screech is getting loud I turn around to take a peek and our eyes meet in a cloud She didn’t recognize me now its been a long long while I put the paper to my face and I give her an old smile JM
