Story behind the song
This version of ONCEagain, is actually from BrotherDouglas' debut, JUST LISTEN. One late night in 1996, riding Amtrak from New York to Philadelphia, I was feeling a strange sense of deja-vu and I didn't like knowing that I'd been trying to learn certain lessons about life, for so long. Once, Again was written in pencil, in my datebook and never became a tune until 1998 when I was approached by guitarist, Bryan McCabe, about a collaboration. When we finally got in sync, the tune came together in about 15 minutes. We got the chance to record it about a month later. This is the first and only vocal take recorded at TMF Studios in New York City. I like this song alot, it really opened the floodgate of music I've created since this first collaboration. I look forward to hearing it, nationally, one day soon.
Lyrics
ONCE, Again (Douglas Powell/Bryan McCabe) Feeling this way, is nothing new I'm tired, listless, just a little confused... This room is familiar, there's been very little change Which might explain why, I'm back here, back here, Once, Again. Heavy is my heart, my face is flushed with shame. But, make no mistake, I've only myself to blame Once, again, I tried something new Forgetting once, again, to my ownself be true Once, Again, I'm back on bended knee. Once, Again, Needing a savior to rescue me If ever I get it back, all that I had before, I promise to forget, the pathways to this door. But here I go, making promises, I can't keep Here I go, not looking, before I leap! Once, Again, I'm back on bended knee. Once, Again, needing a savior to rescue me. There are lessons to be learned, only taught in this room So, once again, I sit, as this class, again, resumes. Here I am, Once, Again. Once Again, feeling defeated. Once, Again, advice went unheeded Once, Again, I tried something new Forgetting, once again, to my ownself, be true, Here I am, Once, Again.
