Electro, Dubstep, Hip Hop
Officially the pair(ruckus & yinface aka Mike Norman & Sebastian Hesp) started collaborating when they were introduced by a mutual friend in December 2006 who thought they would work well together. They did. Unfortunately yin was only in town for a few days and then moved back to Auckland. They continued to collaborate via the internet through early 2007 but kanuka was not fully formed until June 2007 when yin made the move from Auckland back to ruckus's home town of wellington.
Initally it was strictly downbeat and hip hop coming from the boys in the studio, but they soon found themselves immersed in the world of dubstep, writting an entire EP in a matter of weeks, ruckus debuted the pairs dubstep behind the decks playing support for half step legend "amit"(uk) at the local hotspot "San Francisco Bath House"
Soon after the boys started to experiment with differnt genres including house, baltimore club and electro where they instantly found their groove within these genres. However the boys have never wanted to limit themselves to just the one genre and continue to produce across the musical board depending on how the mood strikes.
In the live setting Kanuka brings a serious party atmosphere and pride themselves on exuding a huge amount of energy behind the decks. Rocking a mash-up of many styles in their DJ sets. During 2007 the boys also endeavored to bring something a little different with their sets, playing sometimes with four turntables, 2 mixers and a CDJ when they could to try and create as much of a live performance aspect to their sets as possible.
Now in 2008 KANUKA is in the process of releasing a free CD to the masses, containing bootleg tracks from the pop world, the 6 tunes CD is going to be the pairs first real attempt at breaking into the NZ electronic scene.
2008 has also seen the boys back living in different cities with yin moving a couple of hours up the road to Palmerston North to take up residence as an audio engineer for The Stomach Studio (Creative Sounds). Fortunately, with Palmerston North only being a few hours drive away the boys still manage to get in the studio together regularly as well as working via the internet.
