A lament for someone you loved who is no longer part of your life. It works on two levels - describing someone who has died or someone who just doesn't live with you any more.

Story behind the song
Mark came up with a melody and a bass line (his favoured method to start a song). We worked on it in rehearsals where I provided the finger-picked and rhythm guitar parts. It was not until the actual recording process that we finalized the main melody (there is an alternative take which has subtle differences), the harmonies and tweaked the general arrangement (including adding the guitar leads for the intro and the first verse and removing an extra verse I'd written). Mark had an idea for lyrics that just didn't turn me on at all (I can't remember anything about them now), but I had an idea I wanted to pursue so I took the initiative and wrote my own lyrics (we tended to work on the words together most of the time so this was unusual). My girlfriend's mother had died not long before and originally I wrote this as a way of trying to empathise and show how I imagined my girlfriend must be feeling. Since then, due to various sad events, it has come to mean a lot more to me personally as well.
