Story behind the song

The fourth collaboration between Sachy and me came about in rehearsals when Mark came up with the initial tune set to 'dummy' lyrics (Julian Cope's, if I remember correctly) and a rough bass line that I set chords to. We changed the key during that same rehearsal, probably to make it more suitable for my vocal range. Then gradually, over many lager-fuelled brainstorming sessions, we wrote the lyrics and refined them for what seemed like months, but was actually probably only a short while (I still have all the original lyric drafts for this song and it went through a lot of changes). 
This is the original version with the multi-layered vocal harmonies and a slightly psychedelic, 'dream-like' vocal section I wrote for the middle. 

We had some technical problems with the tape machine during the recording of the vocals that wasted some time and, to speed things up after my lead vocal was done, Mark sang one of the harmonies on the same takes as I did my backing vocals. 

It was virtually impossible to get the mix I wanted from my source tape as the instruments had already been bounced down together into a sub-mix to leave enough channels for the vocal layers, but at least I managed to improve it slightly.
