I'll let the song speak for itself
Country, acoustic folk, folk-rock, indie pop.
One man band - a wide range of acoustic based country, pop and folk crossover music.
Story behind the song
Like most children I played at war - with sticks for swords and spears and guns... I still don't understand why we were/are encouraged to think that war can be fun.
Lyrics
Who Needs War
V1
At four years old, so I've been told,
I was a soldier boy;
I had a scarlet uniform, it was my pride and joy.
With the drums and the guns and the guns and the drums
I'd march away to war;
I'd fight all day and in my play
I would hear those cannon roar
Boom, Boom - Bang, Bang, yeah.
V2
At the age of nine, with a friend of mine,
I'd sail the raging sea;
We flew the Jolly Roger and we did just as we pleased.
We fought at sea with the Queen's Navy,
we fought on ship and shore;
when the Bosun cried we gave a broadside
and made those cannon roar.
Boom, Boom - Bang, Bang, yeah.
V3
When I turned fourteen I changed the scene,
to be better than the rest;
I turned on the charm for the girl on my arm
with the wings upon my chest;
for I was a fighter pilot, they called me the Dog-fight Lord;
from ten o'clock high I'd clear the sky
when I made those cannon roar
Boom, Boom - Bang, Bang, yeah.
Bridge:
Now I'm a man and I understand
about the fighting and the killing
in the far off lands;
people sighing and people dying,
cannons roar and the children crying:
Chorus:
Who needs war?
- certainly not the soldier boy.
Who needs war?
- not the sailor out at sea.
Who needs war?
- not the pilot of an aeroplane:
dropping bombs on people
and that means you and me.
Boom, Boom - Bang, Bang, yeah.
V4
Now I'm growing older, still I can't understand;
why from the age of four years old
I had a rifle in my hand.
And it's never mind the reason
and it's don't discuss the cause;
for your Queen or your flag or your country boy
you just fight when the cannon roars.
Chorus:
Who needs war?
- certainly not the soldier boy.
Who needs war?
- not the sailor out at sea.
Who needs war?
- not the pilot of an aeroplane:
dropping bombs on people
and that means you and me.
Boom, Boom - Bang, Bang, yeah.
