Story behind the song
I have often written songs because someone suggested a theme I should write about. It has often been an effective way of hot-wiring into the "muse". This song is an example, although this time I did not personally know the person who needed the song. I saw an advert in a Folk Magazine asking if anyone had written a song about "autism" - I knew I hadn't and as I had not long seen a re-run on T.V. of "Rainman" I decided to give it a go. The result is this dark song of isolation. I got a brief note of thanks... but never heard anything more. I don't know if the song was ever used in the planned campaign to give "autism" a higher profile in the press. Note: The heavy reverb is deliberate. It is there to aid the suggestion of reverberations within someone's head that echo around their brain with no outlet.
Lyrics
A World of Our Own I never made the decision, To leave all I knew far behind. Cast off on an endless journey, My senses betraying my mind. Others may find rhyme or reason, When their eyes stare deep into mine. I never made the decision, Though I know I was there at the time. CHORUS: A world of our own, a world of our own, A nightmare or dream, A world of our own. Withdrawn or escaping - We're sealed in - alone - Envy us not in a world of our own. I'd like to tell you my story, But my words stay close to my chest. I'd like you to see I'm still in here, I think, feel and breathe with the best. I haven't lost my desire, For love, or the passion to hate, But the ways I have left to express them, Seem impossible now to translate. CHORUS I hear them look for excuses, Who is, or what is to blame? What plunged me into this darkness? Where lies the fault lies the shame. Some are born to the manner, Some wield the staff from the throne, Some wake one day as the rulers, Of a menacing world of their own. CHORUS
