Saturday, Sep. 20th, 2008 through Sunday, Sep. 21st, 2008, the Autumnal Equinox. On the left is a photo collage of the moon based on an actual photo from Washington D.C. Saturday night. On the right is a photo collage illustrating the moon as I and at least 15 other people saw it from the Santa Monica Mountains. A triangular "shadow" blocked out the lower right portion of the moon and its halo for several hours. It was subtle at first glance but very noticeable if you took a good look. As the moon rose higher in the sky, above a low cloud cover, the "shadow" seemed to move with the moon, always blocking the same bottom right portion. The shadow does not appear in two astronomy photos taken that night from the east coast, those photos also lack the distinct glowing halo illustrated in these images. In thirty years I have never seen anything like this. What could have caused it? Was it related to the equinox? __________________________________ Jeff G.
