Story behind the song
This is a thorough re-write of a song that I wrote back in 1972. The original was a folk song, with a straight Em, rather than the jazzy switch between Em and G6. Somewhere I had heard the expression "Lady of the Night," and thought it sounded poetic. I wrote this song using that as the title before I understood what the phrase meant. Ooops! I've re-worked some of the lyrics for this new version. I also rewrote the chords and melody of the second part of each stanza, because, frankly, I can't remember how the original went! The original had no instrumental break, so that part is completely new.
Lyrics
My lady of the sky can you hear me calling? My lady of the sky can you feel me falling? Let me drown in the voice of your wind Gaze into your depths of blue My lady of the highway can you see my headlights burning? My lady of the highway 'round your winding curves I'm turning Down your endless stream of asphalt I must travel on And when your signposts beckon me Look up and I'll be gone Instrumental My lady of the stars let me wander through your galaxies My lady of the stars let me pass beyond your infinities Gently take me from my daydreams Cast me through the night Paint me in your constellations That I may never die
