Story behind the song
This is like the deepest song ever. No seriously. I 've been playing this song live since 1996 and I've never tired of performing it. As I get older the lyrics seem more and more juvenile (but I guess that that's what's charming about it). The bridge near the end of the song where the whole band goes silent was written live on stage at The Portside Room (which was a ship docked off North Vancouver's Lonsdale Quay). Something just hit me like a bolt of lightening and I forgot where I was in the song, so I started improvising the lyrics "She'll never know what its like when you let go". I liked it, so, I kept it. Its the kind of song that somehow makes you feel better because you're really getting something off your chest through it's vocal exercises. I once saw a friend (Andrew Yates) play a cover of it at the Railway Club in Vancouver and I felt all shocked and embarassed like as if he just finished kissing my girlfriend in public and everyone was looking at me to see what I'd do. I think it was the lyrics "Everyday, She's happy, While I'm all alone with my cats all around me." (An all too personal glimpse I suppose).
