Story behind the song
This is the second part of a three-part piece of percussion arrangements. Part 1 was originally conceived for (and performed by) The Rotating Leslies; it is a combination of Brazilian Baiao, Cuban Songo and some Turkish rhythms, with a little original material added on bells and tamborim/cascara. Part 2 was conceived for the Engin Gurkey Percussion Ensemble (who, subsequently, did not use Part 2 on their album, but used Part 1). It's a mathematical composition where each instrument shares the common tatum, but plays in a different meter, such as 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8. All parts meet at the end. Part 3 was inspired by a show featuring Jesus Alfonso---specifically an extended congo solo he played with a shifting ostinato in three parts. This is a sequence of Part 2. I'm still looking (it's been many years) for people who can perform this entire piece.
