Lake Fork Verne and his banjo. Original country and Americana songs. Songs of yesteryear, growing up during the great depression 1930's and the way things are
Just me and my banjo...writing and singing about how things used to be long ago in the 30;s and 40's and how those experiences affect today. I started out wanting to get on record these stories and songs for my grandchildren; but after doing it for a while, others have expresses interest so we are recording and putting them out there.

Story behind the song
Some say this was one of the first recorded songs to make it big in selling over million copies during the pre depression years. This is my version in the Key of D
Lyrics
THE PRISONER'S SONG As recorded by: Vernon Dalhart Writer: Guy Massey CAPO: 2nd fret-BanjoTunedE play D [D] Oh, I wish I had someone to [G] love me Some-[A7] one to call me their [D] own Oh, I wish I had someone to [G] live with 'Cause I'm [A7] tired of livin' a-[D] lone. Oh, please meet me tonight in the moonlight Please meet me tonight all alone For I have a sad story to tell you It's a story that's never been told. I'll be carried to the new jail tomorrow Leavin' my poor darlin' alone With the cold prison bars all around me And my head on a pillow of stone. Now I have a grand ship on the ocean All mounted with silver and gold And before my poor darlin' would suffer Oh, that ship would be anchored and sold. Now if I had wings like an angel Over these prison walls I would fly And I'd fly to the arms of my poor darlin' And there I'd be willin' to die.

I have never heard of the 'Prisoners Song' before. But I enjoyed it, and reading the lyrics to it, as you sang!! We went to Rock City a few weeks ago and they had a gentleman there playing a bango all by himself.......I immediately thought of you and smiled. You don't often see a single bango player.......it's usually a guitar. The bango gives such a nice ole timey feel. When you post on your page to me, I don't see it on my page. I see it when I return to yours, but don't get a notice or anything. You have to post directly on my page for me to see it right away. Thanks for being such a good friend!! Rosie
