Story behind the song
I began a career in EMS back in 1991. Not long after, my partner and I received a call for an “unconscious infant”.
As we pulled up in front of the house, the young mother burst out the front door, off the porch and landed face down, spread eagle in the grass. I was still very new and wasn’t sure what was going on, but was first inside the house.
I ran in to find the young dad holding a limp, lifeless three month old baby. I took the baby and was on the way out of the house before my partner even entered.
We worked on him with all the training and equipment we had. We both had tears rolling down our faces. We were unsuccessful in our attempts.
An autopsy determined it was a SIDS death.
Later that day I began to write a song about the anguish I saw in his parents.
A year or so later, I was turning out of a parking lot and saw a familiar figure walking into a store in the strip mall across the street and recognized it as the dad from that day. Then I noticed he was walking into a shop called “Ryan’s Cards”. He had opened a collectable card shop and named it after his late, infant son. On the way home, I finished the song I had started a year before.
This song is dedicated to Baby Ryan.
Lyrics
Hey God. It’s good to touch your face again
But could you help me understand
Why you brought me back up here so soon?
I was mama’s baby boy
I was mama’s pride and joy
I never got to say “I love you too”
Let her know I miss her too
Let her know I’m here with you
And let her know I pray her soul to keep
I liked it when she held me tight
And when she sang me songs at night
I liked it when she kissed me while I’d sleep
Hey God. Heaven’s such a pretty place
I like the way it smells like rain
I like the way we fly right to the moon
But I was Daddy’s little man
The world’s youngest baseball fan
Now my thoughts will have to come from you
Let him know I love him too
Let him know I’m safe with you
And let him know that he can still believe
I liked it when he held me close
And danced around with me the most
I liked it when he kissed me while I’d sleep
God let ‘em know you hold ‘em tight
And that we sing ‘em songs at night
And let ‘em know I kiss them while they sleep
