Story behind the song
Written to go along with a story for Advent. This song compares David's fight with the Lion to rescue the sheep, to Jesus' fight with Satan, taking OUR place in the Lion's Mouth.
Lyrics
Verse 1: Deep in the woods By a Cascading stream There stalked a young shepherd boy, Hot on a trail! A print in the mud, The red stain of blood, The roar of a lion, And a sheep's pleading wail And he took out his knife as he ran from that place And crashed through the briars That tore at his face. And the lion came back, with the speed of a train And David cried out as he grabbed on his mane: Chorus: Just hang on a little longer! I have come to rescue you! I will follow you as far as I must! And though you ran away, I have followed you all day To take your place in the lion's mouth! Verse 2: Down on His knees, by an olive tree, Jesus knelt praying, 'Can this pass from Me? But if it's Your will, I will do as You say For the debt of the world must all be repaid.' And Satan came roaring to pounce and destroy The disciples all turned and fled in the dark But as Soldiers struck down the King of All Time The Good Shepherd cried out in the depths of His heart: Chorus: Verse 3: Have you run away From your home and your God? Tried to escape all the problems you face? This world can be evil, and colder than ice And it's hard to find help or love anyplace It's a jungle out there I know you've heard that before Now you're learning first-hand that it really is true Now trouble has found you, and there's nowhere to run But the Good Shepherd follows hard after you: Chorus:
