Story behind the song
My wife and I were living in Florida, and she had to return to Minnesota to deal with a family emergency. I went to a party, but was feeling out place without her. One of our friends told me that I looked like a lost puppy. I replied that I am only a half a man when she isn't here. I left shortly after; when I got home, I started writing the song. I finished it 3 days later. Recording tech info: The guitar was recorded using a mid/side mic technique, using a R0de NT1A and a CAD M179 in figure 8 mode. For vocals, I used an MXL 990. For both guitar and vocal, I used ART MP mic preamps going into the line inputs on a Line 6 Toneport UX2 using the Vintage UK preamp model with the HPF set at 80 Hz. I recorded and mixed it using Sonar 7 Producer. I didn't use any EQ, and only added a reverb plug on each track and a little compression on the stereo bus. I used a ModTraps Studio B kit for sound treatment (see their website, http://www.modtrap.com) for both vocal and guitar.
Lyrics
I'm sittin' here about half a beer Away from being stoned Half asleep with half a mind to call her on the phone So I pick on my old guitar in my semi-conscious state I know she'll be home Sunday, but it's half a week away And when she's gone I'm half a song Just a verse with no refrain I'm more than half way 'round the bend And less than half way sane There's a missing part inside my heart That only she can fit I'm half a man when she's not here But I was less before we met She found me brash and bitter Content to be alone My trust and faith were laid to waste And my heart turned to stone But she could see what used to be And what could be once more She held the key to what should be And said to me, "Unlock the door" Now the Sunday sun is runnin' on To where the West wind flies And in the dark I catch the spark From my true love's green eyes And she says, "I'll tell you something "If you promise not to laugh Every day I was away I felt like I was torn in half And when she's gone I'm half a song Just a verse with no refrain I'm more than half way 'round the bend And less than half way sane There's a missing part inside my heart That only she can fit I'm half a man when she's not here But I was less before we met And when she's gone I'm half a song Just a verse with no refrain I'm more than half way 'round the bend And less than half way sane There's a missing part inside my heart That only she can fit I'm half a man when she's not here But I was so much less before we met
