Story behind the song
I was living in East Lansing, Michigan in 1996. I woke up on a Saturday morning, and it was the first beautiful spring day after a long, cold winter. I looked out the window and saw the bus stop up the street and a man waiting for the bus and this is what came out.
Lyrics
I know a man who lives down the street Rides on the bus in the very front seat His mother’s sour, but his sister’s sweet Sings in the shower and talks in her sleep Mmmm, she’s a lovely daughter My, it’s a lovely day To call her up maybe ask for a date Promise her Ma I won’t bring her home late Run in the sun and sleep in the shade Go see the boss cause I gotta get paid Mmmm, she’s a lonely dreamer My, it’s a lonely day BRIDGE Leaves on the trees just haven’t come back Old man winter won’t cut us no slack Seems like the sun won’t ever shine Your bed’s not made and you’re runnin’ behind Her old man’s out gotta trim up the hedge Ma’s playin’ cards by the swimming pool’s edge She’s all alone waitin’ up in her room I’d like to call her up but I think it’s too soon Mmmm, she’s a lazy daisy My, it’s a lazy day She don’t like to smoke and she don’t like to swear Time to go to bed gotta say her prayers She dreams in the den and she sleeps on the stairs Likes to go swimming in her underwear Mmmm, she’s a cloudy baby My, it’s a cloudy day BRIDGE Leaves on the trees alive and green Prettiest day that I’ve ever seen Sun’s come back he’s gonna shine Your bed’s been made and you’re runnin’ on time She tried to run away but she didn’t get far She didn’t have wings and she didn’t have a car They locked her in her room and they threw away the key Her Ma didn’t want her runnin’ with me Mmmm, she’s a rainy lady My, it’s a rainy day Then one night I got some money to spend Said that I’d meet her up around the bend But she didn’t come I could only pretend Stayed in her room didn’t see her again Mmmm, she’s a perfect lover My, it’s a perfect day
