Story behind the song
Many parents feel guilty about how they treated their children. I personally have a drug addiction (23 years in recovery) and damaged my children because of it. This song is about a father missing his child but a the same time feeling grateful for how well she turned out inspite of the dysfunction she grew up in.
Lyrics
I look in the mirror and this is what I see; a young old man with gray hair is staring back at me. Their ain't no kids around the house, they're off doing other things. My babies making babies, oh how things have changed. Chorus: Sweet little innocent ones are playing on her floor. She's remembering what it was like many years before, many years before. V2: She swears that she won't treat them the way they treated her; such pain and lonliness no child should endure. (back to chorus) V3 I see her with her babies, she treats them tenderly, with love and sacrifice, that's the way it ought to be. (back to chorus) V4 The kids they call me grandpa. They smile when they see my face. Such love and trust, oh what amazing grace. (back to chorus and finish)
