Story behind the song
Was thinking of the impending loss of a friend who'd seen nearly all of the 20th century, rode the rails as a teenage drifter, served in WWII . . . We have heard your voice again, old buddy.
Lyrics
"Bless This Road"
In the sand -- in the snow
There are footprints -- that no one knows
A spirit walks, a tune survives
A human heart tries -- all of its life, to be strong
The whispering -- of night to come
Subdues the old, ignites the young
A heart takes warning -- from a shooting star
That love can seek you
Then burn you where you are
But it keeps calling us to lift ourselves again
And brush the ash away
And we keep stumbling along its twisted path
Dodging heartache overload
If its all we got . . .
Bless this road
A dust-bowl soldier, his battles done
A prairie girl, honed by the sun
They came from elsewhere, to ride the rails
They built a nation . . . from sea, and ships, and sails
And we'll be listening to hear their voice again
Through the wind and the rain
And we keep stumbling across their countryside
Where right and left duel hand-to-hand
If its all we got . . .
Bless this land
In the sand, and in the snow
There will be footprints -- that others know
Some of them weary, some gone to rest
Some sail the sunrise . . . with stars upon their chest
And well keep listening to hear your voice again
Though the wind and the rain
And well keep tumbling on down this beaten path
Where life and death go toe-to-toe
If its all we got . . .
Bless this road
