Story behind the song
In Michigan I was called "Frenchman" due to my French-Canadian heritage. In Tennessee I am "Yankee". I wrote this for Nashville Weather to explain how a Yankee Frenchman came to be in an souther Irish band.
Lyrics
10/01/03
A way back in the early days the colonies did form
And good folks came from every place in a migratory storm
From Scotland came some pipers, from Holland came the Dutch
From Eire came the reels and jigs we love so very much
A ship sailed from the shores of France and much to their remorse
A mighty gale posessed their sails and set a Northern course
It landed in them in Canada as Toronto settled in
So the Frenchmen set their traps and snares and bartered for the skins

They made a right fine livin' what peltin' could afford
But Frenchmen do aspire and some of them got bored
The clan from Burrough of Lorrain thier wares tied to a hod
Made it down to Michigan but for the grace of God

Well one of them kept goin' to the hills of Tennessee
And hooked up with an Irish band that's how you're meetin' me
I love to sing the ballads and I've got a quick right hand
The story of a Yankee Frenchman in an Irish band
(He's just a Yankee Frenchman in a Southern Irish band)
Now Martin's a grand piper he'll lead us in a jig
Miss Hoos, she moves the lower notes that make us sound so big
Sir Byers is the fiddler and a master of the lore
On drums Miss Hoeft so skillfully adds energy galore
And me I play the rhythm before you I do stand
The story of a Yankee Frenchman in an Irish band
(He's just a Yankee Frenchman in a Southern Irish band)
The Irish songs transformed me they are a lively lot
and brought ol' Erin to me heart tied in a Celtic knot
I could just be the happiest that ever was a man
The story of a Yankee Frenchman in an Irish band
