Story behind the song
I love New Orleans; the 'natural' disaster that was Hurricane Katrina could not be averted. The 'human' disaster that was our national response is inexcusable. If we can't do better, we're lost. This song expresses my best wishes for New Orleans and her incredible people.
Lyrics
Where the mighty river meets the Gulf of Mexico You welcomed generations seeking shelter from the storm Trumpets of resurrection call you from on high Choirs of your angels sing grievous lullabies Lay down, Big Easy; lay your burden down Sleep now for a while like a lazy bayou town Rest your broken body so you may rise up once again There’ll be a new New Orleans just around_______ the river bend In your storied streets is heard the marching of the saints In grim and solemn homage to your suffering and pain Tumba, tumba Mardi Gras, bring back your sweet refrain And make true the age-old promise that the South will rise again God made the Mississippi, God made Lake Ponchartrain God made their Crescent City, God made the hurricane God give us strength to help all those in misery and pain Until their jubilee is sounding in New Orleans once again
