Story behind the song
hanging out on peaks island, right near portland, i couldn't have been more struck by how much of america the dream was represented. i sat on a porch, watched life pass by, and wrote it down.

sittin’ on an old blue porch on an island afternoon watchin’ life stroll by dog bark bites from 3 or 4 doors down doesn’t much matter but i can’t help wonder why a beat up old red pick up truck lazily cruises past might can’t go too fast anymore anyway a couple of kids roll past on their bikes wave hello hello back at you boys have fun wherever it is your going this is america as it should be the promise the dream and everything in between this is america as it could be maybe everyone could see it then it would be i hear the hollowed out thud of an apple falling down off a tree one followed down by another man, i got some work ahead of me from somewhere in the neighbors yard a whistle drifts through the air can’t quite catch the tune but then i don’t really care a pleasant looking round faced lady makes her way down the road throws a wonderful smile my way and i see she’s got her man in tow can’t help but think they’re from the mainland maybe out for a visit with the kids maybe here for a minute alone there’s a beautiful lady on the lawn playing with a couple beautiful kids it’s something millions of men have sat and marveled at before when such a think as this comes along you just can’t turn your head you’d be a fool not to look for as long as you can you’d be a fool to ignore it’s a perfect island day – sun giving off just the right amount of heat perfect island day – living large in the love surrounding me perfect island day – i can just make out the sea through the trees perfect island day – i wish everyone could see sittin’ on an old blue porch on an island afternoon watchin’ life stroll by dog bark bites from 3 or 4 doors down doesn’t much matter but i can’t help wonder why
