Story behind the song
Written from an "involved bystander's" point of view. Romance is such a sad little thing. Gets people all worked up and vulnerable. I guess some would say thats the point of the whole exercise. Its certainly good fodder for songs though, so I can't complain. Some of my favorite songs are the melodramatic kind.
Lyrics
you've paid me in full this evening but was it really a fair bargain you wander into places you've never been to before Does it occur to you, I'm no longer on the shore Congratulations baby, you've reached another low I don't want to be here when you hit the floor He's a connoisseur of all the pretty things Particularly fond of those with broken wings exactly like you, my starry eyed girl he still believes he can conquer the world Congratulations baby, you've reached another low I don't want to be here when you hit the floor The paintings, the pictures, you wish you could have seen It breaks your heart to think of all you could have been So you'll save everything you could possibly keep And give up the rest to his increasing need
