i was puttering on the banjo, thinking about having said goodbye to a couple wonderful dogs in the neighborhood and other animals and people who have passed into and out of my life, and thinking about the word, farewell. i haven't looked it up in the dictionary, but i'd guess that it once had a meaning like "fare thee well", or "be well".
