Story behind the song
erin (who has amazing talent), was perhaps the first kid in this community to have pink, sometimes blue, sometimes no... hair, had a way of breaking through barriers early in the game of life. as a parent, it was a bit of a challenge, but seeing things through her eyes has given me a far richer life than if i'd traveled the world and watching her travel so freely through life, and ideas, has continually reminded me to peek around the corners of my conclusions.
Lyrics
Thank You -- Jim Dyer
Thank you for showing me the outside of the box.
Thank you for helping me untie what I thought were knots
'round my hands from being told, "You can't do that!",
'round my eyes from being told, "You shouldn't see that!",
'round my ears from being told, "you didn't hear that from me."
Thank you for reminding me of all those tools upon my shelf --
slightly dusted from disuse and time -- a little work will rub off the rust
(and make 'em shine).
After all, I'm doing the best I can.
You didn't live my life. You don't know how far I've come
to be this man.
Thank you for letting me be just who I am
on my round-about way to perfect -- I can hardly wait to find out what
I'll be like at journey's end.
And thought the gods know that I'll never be,
at least you've refrained from reminding me.
Thank you for showing me the outside of the box.
I'd gotten so used to staring up at that same blue patch of sky
I'd forgotten there was any place else.
But just like you said when you were breaking all the rules,
"There's an ocean outside this ship of fools. Jump in. Take a swim."
Thank you.
There's not much more I can do, but thank you.
Thank you.
