my attempt to write a 'solid' country tune -- clean and simple, just like the title of the cd. i've tried to change the genre on this page to country, but it won't 'take.'

Story behind the song
ages ago, when i was immersed in the rock 'n roll scene, my mother, now passed, kept complaining that i never played any country music. i wrote this with memories of growing up on a dairy farm in the catskills, with wild flowers abounding.
Lyrics
Tiger Lilies
We start out with so few possessions, nothin' in our minds
but curiosity and a memory for what we find
and as we stumble through the brambles and pick burdocks from our hair,
we open up like flowers -- repay in kind.
I've wandered along some dusty roads, picked rocks and tossed them aside
when a splash of color'd flicker by my eye.
I'd stop, look up, beside the road in splendor there arrayed
an orange cloud juxtaposed against the sky.
I'd pick those Tiger Lilies, and I'd put 'em in a bunch,
run 'em home and stand 'em in a jar.
They'd look so pretty displayed there, their faces in the sun, but
they'd wilt and die before they saw a star.
Nature's window showed me then what I'd take years to learn
as friends, soon lovers, faded from my sight.
If beauty's what you're looking for, don't disregard their plight --
cut lilies'll fade and die before the night.
The best of our intentions when we share the sights we've seen
had better come without a sacrifice, 'cause if we
grow a smile in someone's eye while another grows a tear, then
we've rolled on principle and lost the dice.
So don't pick those Tiger Lilies and don't put 'em in a bunch,
or run 'em home and stand 'em in a jar.
They'll look so pretty displayed there, their faces in the sun, but
they'll wilt and die before they see a star.
They'll wilt and die before they see a star.
