Story behind the song
Based on a poem by my nephew, Alexander Greene
Lyrics
Verse 1
It was a bright September day in two thousand one.
Then the sky, it turned black and blocked out the sun.
It was another dark day in two thousand three,
when we marched into Baghdad to force our democracy. {Chorus}
Chorus
Why do we have to kill just to prove that we are strong?
Can we overcome our differences?
Can we all just get along?
I’m tired of writing all these anti-war songs.
We’re all in this together.
Why can’t we just get along?
Verse 2
On any given day in two thousand four,
Another bomb explodes, and things are worse than before.
Now the battle rages on—it’s two thousand six.
And it’s clear the divide among us, this war just cannot fix. {Chorus}
