An aching song of separation and desperation
songwriter acoustic ballads blues keyboards 12 string dan matheny
Solo act playing original and cover material on 12-string and keyboards. Available for booking in Central Oklahoma.
I have been playing and writing songs for more years than most of you have been alive. I started classical piano when I was 8, 12-string guitar when I was ten, and wrote my first song when I was 16. I am largely self-taught, but have benefitted greatly from the many bands I've played with over the years. I've also been an avid listener of music, and sought to incorporate many different styles into my songwriting. As you will hear, my songs reflect the fact that I've been many places and done many things other than just play music. They have, in the original sense of the word, character.

Story behind the song
Written after my wife of 12 years threw all my stuff out onto the front yard of my friends house, leaving me without a home or a vehicle. It was our 5th and final separation, and it was clear that she had shut the door to a reconcilliation. I took it kind of hard, because I really did love her, and did not want a divorce.
Lyrics
One too many times, two too many ways, I must remember the things you used to say. We take no pleasure in being so in love, It's just a silly game, I wind all ashamed. There's always a better reason, There's always a another lesson. I must remember the things I'm supposed to say So hear what I've spoken: Aren't I just mad? You've closed another door, this time it must be war. I think I'll go home now But there's no place to stay You've bought out all the rooms With your melancholy ways. We say we're going somewhere We say we've made a start We tell our friends we're together But how we fall apart. We take no pleasure in falling out of love We're just a silly pair, playing truth or dare.
