Story behind the song
Review by bigwheel Badass Tunes Inc Believe (Roy's Revenge) stuff here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=694017 I love my drum n bass, though that said I am no expert and definitely no shakes when it comes to knowing the genre well or naming artists and sub genres. For me, in my ignorance, there's a few types of DnB: the mellow/sunny stuff, like wot I do, the jump-up dance yer ass off stuff like wot pendulum have done, the shiny clever stuff like wot Roni Size and Adam F did, and then there's the spooky made-of-edits kind of stuff that I'm listening to now. I'm put strongly in mind of a CD I was once given, quite sometime ago now: a DJ mix by Coldcut http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,230386,00.html and for my money, Believe would sit happily amongst the varied stuff on this mix - Photek, Jedi Knights, Dillinja et al - not because it is stylistically the same, but because it has the same mood. There's a strong 'bad trip' element to this track right from the start - ethereal almost intelligible voices disjointed samples and noises which seem to fly past you before you can quite grasp what they are - it's something of a soundtrack to a gentle nightmare with breaks, held together by a very DnB lick over sweeping sub basses and tightly edited and glitched loops. This is actually a hard track to describe and review - it is an exercise in off the wall abstract with a strange flavour of world music played by robots. What I do know is that a listener other than myself could easily hear a totally different range of things than those which I have described. To be sure, on my fourth listen I'm still hearing things I didn't hear the last time, and mood and style aside, that's always a good thing with electronic music. I've been a bad boy in 2007 and Santa didn't bring me my scoring system like I asked, so for now I will give this a TRIPPY, MAN award because it is. D
