Story behind the song
Written for a musical ("Song of Three Rivers"). The musical sets a romantic triangle between the tough colonel Arbuckle and the wimpy General Leavenworth for the hand of Antoinette, the beautiful Osage princess. The song is about the competion between the Arkansas, a tough roaring river, and the Illinois, a wimpy little trickle as they compete for the beautiful clear Grand river. The song of the rivers reflect the romance between the Colonel and the Osage princess and the General who tries to steal her affections.
