Story behind the song
I wrote this for my wife just after we married in 1964. Although we often sang some of my other pieces at parties and ceilidhs we never sang this one as my wife considered it too personal. However, we're now long divorced and the song brings back happy memories to me
Lyrics
You must have heard my heart beat
As I cancelled the ignition.
Together on the car-seat in an intimate position.
A paradise of shining eyes.
I whispered: “I love you.”
I kissed you once, your warm response
Encouraged me to say it.
The time was right. I held you tight
And whispered, and whispered:
“I love you; I love you;
“I love you, need you, want you - say you will be mine.
“Darlin’, my darlin,
“We’ll share this love until the stars no longer shine.
“I’ll buy a diamond,
“You’ll wear it and the world will recognize the sign:
“Darlin’, my darlin, be mine.”
You told me how you used to
Lie upon your bed a dreamin’
Of how you’d be proposed to
By a knight in armour gleamin’.
But there was I, a common guy,
No dashin’ cavalier.
And yet ‘twas true, my love for you
Could never be disputed .
I bless the night I held you tight
For I heard you whisper:
“I love you; I love you;
“I love you, need you, want you - take me for your wife
“I’ll wear your diamond
“And everyone will know that I am yours for life.
“Hold me, my darlin’,
“For when I’m in your arms I feel so warm and safe
“Darlin’, my darlin’ I’m yours.
