Story behind the song
If ever you wanted to hear a classic guitar hook within a song, this is it. Coming from the second round of jams in the rehearsal studio, Kelli was looking to develop something that would reflect that classic country sound. The distinctive guitar riff set the tone for the song and it spent the first month of its existence referred to as "The Johnny Cash track", often accompanied by much humming and singing of the hook - much to the drummer's amusement. Unlike Big Black Bus and Ride where Kelli already had a good idea of the lyrical message, Preacher's Daughter was a blank slate. Right from the beginning when Thom came down from the drum riser and brought the snare into the middle of the room, the song was developed as a musical platform first, with no obvious lyric or melody. You can listen to a clip from that initial session at www.kelli.com. Sitting over breakfast in Dana Point California, the discussion centered on what would be a good story to accompany such a classic country feel. It only took Kelli to come out with the line: "The Devil rode into town on a horse black as midnight," to send Andrew running back to the car for a notepad and pen. Amidst egg white omelets and double sides of bacon, the Preacher's Daughter came to life. The Preacher's Daughter currently opens the Kelli live show and it is a lot of fun to play. The interaction between Kelli and the guitar represents the interaction between the Preacher and the Devil himself. The cool thing about the live show is that you'll see a different battle every time!
Lyrics
The Devil rode into town on a horse black as midnight "Preacher" he cried "your time has come and, bring your daughter with you." The Preacher walked out with his head held high, and a bottle in his hand. "Devil that's not the deal I made" and the Devil said " that's true, but I've changed my mind and I'm taking your soul and your Daughter's too!" The Preacher said "It's been 5 short years since you left my girl alone, and I promised my soul if you'd let her go and that's the only one you'll own." "Those are mighty big words for a Preacher Man" said the Devil as he laughed evilly. And the Preacher said, "Hey Devil, that's how its gonna be, But before I go and you take my soul, have a little drink with me." The Devil raised his glass in the air, locked eyes with the Preacher and they knocked that Whiskey down. When he saw that the fear in the Preacher had gone, The Devil knew, something gone wrong, His body started shaking and his eyes rolled back, And the earth opened up with a terrible crack, He heard the Preacher cry, "don't come back" With a scream the Devil was gone! The Devil never showed his face again in that old town And the Preacher never told a soul of how he knocked that Devil down But I was there on that fateful day, and I'm telling you its true: A Preacher Man, yes he can, bless that Whiskey too. A Preacher Man, yes he can, bless that Whiskey too. A Preacher Man, yes he can, bless that Whiskey too.
