Story behind the song
Nelly Bly was a black servant girl of one of Foster's friends, written in 1850 - ten years later it was used as a parody for Lincoln's campaign with the chorus: Hi lincoln, ho Lincoln, - an honest man for me, I'll sing for you, I'll shout for you the people's nominee!
