Story behind the song
As you have already read or heard on the CD for yourself, there is an underlying theme on this CD on lost love, of a significant other not bringing out the best in you. Love certainly has a tendency to blind us. Ia€™ve experienced it, Ia€™ve watched my best friends experience it, and in this songa€¦I watched my little sister go through it. It was a horrible, trying, and frustrating time in her life, as well as for my family. We all felt so helpless because there was nothing we could do to turn off what was happening. Unfortunately, as wea€™ve all experienced, people have to learn for themselves, you cana€™t do it for them. And once they get burned enough, then theya€™ll realize that they are only hurting themselves. Thata€™s what this song is about. Ita€™s about someone in denial of what is TRULY taking place and because of it, the train is headed straight towards them at a furiously fast pace. As we wrote this song, several other situations/individuals popped into my head, which made the song even that much more special to me. My co-writer, Kim Copeland, actually came up with the title after watching a biography on television of Janis Joplin. Someone had said that it felt like they were watching her dance on the train tracks, and she had no clue that the train was so close. I get that.
Lyrics
Cana€™t See The Train (K. Copeland/R. Williams) He gave you some attention once But now hea€™s just a taker And youa€™ve got yourself addicted to his lies You think youa€™re standing strong Against a world that just dona€™t get it When the truth is youa€™re too weak to cut the ties Chorus a€˜Cause you want what you want But what you want aina€™t real And you cana€™t make him feel What he aina€™t gonna feel You swear youa€™re smiling a the sun, Shining through the rain Youa€™re the only one who cana€™t see the train Ia€™d kill him with my own two hands, little sister Just to save you But you dona€™t seem to want nobodya€™s help It tears me up to watch you there, Dancina€™ on the tracks Knowing only you can save yourself Chorus a€˜Cause you want what you want But what you want aina€™t real And you cana€™t make him feel What he aina€™t gonna feel You swear youa€™re smiling a the sun, Shining through the rain Youa€™re the only one who cana€™t see the train Ia€™ve fought those demons Thata€™s how I know And ita€™s too late to run Once that whistle blows Chorus a€˜Cause you want what you want But what you want aina€™t real And you cana€™t make him feel What he aina€™t gonna feel You swear youa€™re smiling a the sun, Shining through the rain Youa€™re the only one who cana€™t see the train Why cana€™t you see the train?
