Story behind the song
A result of a collaboration at the UKSF (United Kingdom Song Festival) between myself and Amanda because we were set the task of collaborating and we just happened to be two strangers sitting next to each other - the result was enlightening and interesting... to say the least. Amanda got the title from a film of the same name. Amanda once lived in Austin so I set that place as our goal and we were away... we hope you like our collaboration.
Lyrics
From Hell To Texas Words & Music Amanda Regan & Dai Crowther I did not know in ninety-three When I said yes, to his bended knee That I’d be wed to the devil in disguise It took to the age of thirty-four ‘Till it hit home I could take no more Of the hell I saw reflected in his eyes ‘Cause I have scrimped but never saved The fists I’ve dodged, the nights I’ve braved And moods that swung from dumb to outright mad That striking devil tried to take Every friend I tried to make Just like he took all the joy I ever had Chorus: It’s a long, long road from Hell to Texas And I’m driving with the devil by my side But when I reach my Heaven’s Gate in Austin I’ll no longer be this devil’s bride When Momma got sick I got the news But at the time I was cut and bruised So I couldn’t show my face at Momma’s door Three month’s on she became a star Daddy phoned and I broke my heart And out poured every hurt I held in store I’ve been a lone-star out of state Now I’m heading home and ‘though its late Its better late than never daddy says He and my brothers Luke and John Will say hello and bring me home Before that devil gets his judgement day Chorus: It’s a long, long road from Hell to Texas And I’m driving with the devil by my side But when I reach my Heaven’s Gate in Austin I’ll no longer be this devil’s bride Bridge: The Devil didn’t go down in Georgia ‘Cause they sent him on his way Now he’ll learn not to mess with Texas When he gets his judgement day Chorus: It’s a long, long road from Hell to Texas And I’m driving with the devil by my side But when I reach my Heaven’s Gate in Austin I’ll no longer be this devil’s bride Coda: But when I reach my Heaven’s Gate in Austin I’ll no longer be this devil’s bride Fin.
