Story behind the song
Song #1 for the 2007 Fifty song challenge group. One of my friends spent time in an orphanage in Tennessee and inspired this song about fictional characters.
Lyrics
I was born and raised near the Tennessee River I was nine when Momma died they packed up my brother and me, to the orphanage. Times were hard, the master was mean Life was full of misery. On Saturday, he'd take us to town to beg for pennies and work the crowd. /bluegrass refrain / My brother would play the fiddle I would sing and story tell people gave us their spare pennies down by the wishing well Each year life was harder never saw or heard from our father Saturdays were always the same go to town and play our game. /refrain My brother would play the fiddle I would sing and story tell people gave us their spare pennies down by the wishing well When I was 13, my brother ran away hard to understand in many ways Life was never the same, Saturday was twice as strange /refrain They found another boy to play the fiddle I would still sing and story tell people still gave us their spare pennies down by the wishing well I grew up and settled down, married, two kids, my feet on the ground Then one day on the TV my son sees someone that looks like me I run and hear an old time tune from my life long ago After the man was done playing he had a story to tell: /refrain When I was young I played the fiddle my sister would sing and story tell people gave us their spare pennies down by the wishing well One more time, he picked up the fiddle played that old time tune again I sang that song I used to know from my life, so long ago /refrain My long lost brother plays the fiddle I sing a song with a story to tell about my life so long ago down by the wishing well ... down by the wishing well
