Newfoundland To California
Lament on becoming separated from your roots and your people. Disappointment.
Story behind the song
There are many things that cause a man to wander or become displaced. Could be employment, love, running from something, confinement. Then he may wake up one morning and a lifetime has gone by. Down inside, the need to salvage something is manifested in the warning or advice to others to not get lost as time goes by.

Newfoundland to California
It don’t matter much to me
From where I’m lying this morning
Just a desert in there to me
Nova Scotia to Seattle
All that wandering in between
Give anything to get back that island
Long as I could be free
Take these chains from my ankles
Take this blindfold from my eyes
To see that salty old Atlantic
One more time before I die
Our grand daddies were fishermen
Made their livin’ from the sea
Their hopes and dreams were all rooted
In better life for you and me
Somewhere down along their proud journey
Strangers in the night they did come
Tried to tell us our way was dying
But they would show us a better one
They built their fortress in the highlands
They flew their flag on the hill
They stand on guard outside their prison
But they will never break our will
Well come on home boys don’t let them fool ya
Into thinking what you should do
Their’s a promise back here on the island
A promise that your people made to you
While other pastures can look greener
A man got to feed curiosity
Sooner or later he’ll be understanding
There’s a place in life he’s meant to be
Later on the served will be serving
And what they’re building will fall down
But your home back here on this island
It will always be around
