Story behind the song
“When Mother Returns” is a tune I produced by taking things out of context. I used electro elements and meshed them with darker pads to create a “strangely” interesting soundtrack. The idea was to keep it somewhat childlike and yet try to tell a complete story in less than six minutes. It’s a somewhat bleak drama, but then the world is full of non-conventional characters and stories that don’t fit the fairy tales we were all accustom to as children. If you use your imagination the intro is suppose to be like a large moth inside a sealed jar. The experiment was to produce a tune that conveyed the notion that not everything is as it seems and in this case – sounds. Ordinarily happy sounds can have a dark side too. To the nurses who knew about Kyle – his life was a sad poetic irony. Kyle kept to himself. He collected moths at night and dragonflies by day. He loved to watch them inside his killing jar until they were fit to be pinned to his collection. He was fascinated with the lunar moth and had a vast collection of various species. When he was able to get away from the institution he liked to go to the park and hunt for dragonflies. It was their sleek bodies and delicate wings he like the most. He past the time by working on his collection until the day mother would return. The staff repeatedly removed boxes of his “dead things” as time passed. The truth was Kyle was no longer a child at 22 – (except in his mind), and mother was never going to return. Kyle was diagnosed early with a devastating mental defect. Kyle’s father was a violent man and his mother had developed a crippling fear of him. His mother blamed Kyle for his father’s more recent violent outbursts and her solution was to secretly poison Kyle slowly. With everyone concerned over Kyle’s mysterious illness his father spent his time avoiding the seriousness of Kyle’s situation with work and lengthy business trips. A concerned neighbor called the authorities in fear of Kyle’s life. After a lengthy recovery Kyle was saved from certain death and an investigation was started. Kyle was removed from his parents and placed in an institution that could care for him. Kyle’s mother was found guilty by reason of insanity of attempted murder and also institutionalized. Kyle’s father escaped his guilt with alcoholism and shortly died in an automobile accident. Kyle never quite understood exactly what his mother did to him and in his young mind he loved her like no one else and eagerly waited to show her his “dead things” in vain.
