Story behind the song
I participated in a living history event at Old Mill Village, New Milford, Pa. It's about walking in the footsteps of fugitive slaves seeking freedom in Susquehanna County in the 1800's.
Lyrics
We slept through the day, traveled by night On foot trails to Canada, to start a new life Every word whispered day's journey in the dark Stepping so quietly as not to get caught (Chorus) The Underground Railroad set up to free men Running through the night catch us if you can To live as a slave forced to break free Hiding out in houses just to get away When the white man comes looking we're already gone The conductor there to meet us our journey's just begun (Chorus) The Underground Railroad set up to free men Running through the night catch us if you can Through farmlands, woodlands, fields and bogs Wallowing in creek beds, hiding in logs The white man chases us with his dogs A whipping post beating if we get caught (Chorus) The Underground Railroad set up to free men Running through the night catch us if you can So if you're out walking some hot summer night And you here the sound of whispers that slartle you with fright Just remember the story I had just told Life about slavery and the Underground Railroad (Chorus) The Underground Railroad set up to free men Running through the night catch us if you can (Chorus) The Underground Railroad set up to free men Running through the night catch us if you can
