Story behind the song
I wrote this on Memorial day morning while watching a documentary on Arlington National Cemetery. In the documentary, they showed a mom going to her sons grave every weekend and writing him a letter. They tracked her through the year. I was blown away at the fact that there are 250000 graves there. We take our freedom for granted. Thanks to all of you who fight for us so I can even write words like this.
Lyrics
Arlington Row By Lonnie Crampsey Memorial Day 2007 I saw her standing there with tears in her eyes Pen and paper in her hands, And all her questions, why? With pain expressed beyond the grave for someone that shed known Every weekend you will find her on this Arlington row Reaching out into the past Seeking answers from her God Her memories are all that lasts This is now her new found lot Ive never felt so proud, and Ive never seen your face Glancing from cross to clouds, in this amazing place Ive never count the cost, for what my freedom holds A quarter of a million lost, on these Arlington rows Some from the civil war, brothers that chose their sides They battled for the blue and grey, then they gave up their lives From the Arizona on its side To D-Days bloody shores Laid out before my eyes on these Arlington rows Reaching out into the past Seeking answers from my God History is all that lasts Repeating this path that were on The burden of my easy life, laid out in perfect lines Centuries of peoples lives, and the wars in which they died Forgive me if I take for granted, this freedom that I know The cost is buried here for me in this Arlington row Reaching out beyond myself With a humbled and grateful heart Freedom is much more then wealth That realization is a start
