Story behind the song
Ellen was a poor girl who lived on Second Street Barefoot with a worn out shirt and a Dad who’d always cheat. So he’d pass out on the couch some nights and wake up in another year, So he’d gaze around the room and say, “hey girl, go fetch my beer.” And she’d dress up like an angel every year on Halloween But she felt more like an army man who’s scarcely ever seen. So she’d cry at night and sometimes pray that God would find a way To make her something beautiful and wipe her tears away. Pretty butterfly, she doesn’t know that she grew wings. Pretty butterfly, so full of broken dreams. She met Walker in the tenth grade and he asked her to the dance, And she didn’t really care for him, but she longed for someone’s glance. He played her like a fiddle ‘till she had nothing left to give Then he dropped her like a hotcake for a girl in Western Civ. So Ellen was alone again; frantic for a touch, She surrendered to the vampires who ate her heart for lunch. Every time she sternly swore that she would not get hurt again, But she’d find another lover when she just needed a friend. Pretty butterfly, she doesn’t know that she grew wings. Pretty butterfly, so full of broken dreams. Now she’s standing on a corner, selling out like something cheap. She’s an angel on that corner who fell in a little bit too deep. She needs words of admiration that no one ever said. But no one said, “I love you” and kissed her pretty head. Pretty butterfly, she doesn’t know that she grew wings. Pretty butterfly, so full of broken dreams.
