Lyrics
TWO CAMPBELLS ROBERTS AND THORN 㦠By Noel Downs (April 25 1992) In the early ANZAC dawn, Walking to the ANZAC Park, The chill is in the morning air, The road still very dark, Behind I heard a chink on stone, I turned and saw a horse, A fine upstanding gelding, And we were travelling the same course, Upon his back a young bloke, About the same age as me, Dressed up as a lighthorse man, We were then joined by another three, They locked into march formation, Two in front and two behind, They all cheerfully offered me a ride, And cheerfully I declined, We talked as we walked along, In the early morning dawn, They introduced themselves to me, They were the two Campbells, Roberts and Thorn, Now my town is but a small one, And I felt I knew their names, But I could not place their faces, Or from where they came, And when we reached the service, I thought they'd lead the fray, But they remained out in the background, With their heads bowed as they prayed, When the service was over, I looked but they were gone, But in the names inscribed in the stone before me, I saw two Campbells, Roberts and Thorn.
