Story behind the song
The first time through the new CD by Dawn Mitchell, one might write her off as an Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday imitator and move on. Yes, sometimes she's all girlish voice and cottony lyrics, like Ella. Sometimes her voice has that certain waver that conveys vulnerability, like Billie. But listen again and those facile comparisons burn off like morning fog. Mitchell, a product of the Caribbeans with British-Italian seasoning, has a voice of her own and has chosen tunes with depth and sophistication so she can make us feel what she feels. In her best moments, which are plentiful, Mitchell delivers strong jazz in many styles, backed by shining instrumentalists. Her highlight is Mesmerizer, a beautiful and haunting song that she shares with a compassionate soprano sax player. The song's theme runs in seven time with some more suprises on the metered way, an approach unfamiliar to listeners used to tapping their toes in four-four time. But her melody is so strong that the song works perfectly, helped by a switch to standard time in the middle for contrast. Mitchell does equally well on Lorella (track 6.) She delivers a straight-forward message of "don't give up being you" and it rings sincere thanks to the delicate melody carried in soulful duet by voice and horn. The song ends in just 2:15 and screams out for another verse and a couple choruses of solos. Mitchell proves she can swing -- and scat -- like Ella in Just A Moment (track 5.) And she does justice to the tasty Think To Paolo, a tune that's really made by an unexpected dynamite soprano sax solo that transports the groove from mellow Latin to a stirring crescendo. All in all, the strengths of this CD far outweigh the shaky moments, such as Mitchell's tendency to push her voice a bit above its range in search of drama, and her occasional foray into a vocal style best left to opera. A strong start for Dawn. This review copyright of Jazz Forum Magazine, August 2005
Lyrics
You go to my head You go to my head, And you linger like a haunting refrain And I find you spinning round in my brain Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne. You go to my head Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew And I find the very mention of you Like the kicker in a julep or two. The thrill of the thought That you might give a thought To my plea casts a spell over me Still I say to myself: get a hold of yourself Can't you see that it can never be? You go to my head With smile that makes my temperature rise Like a summer with a thousand Julys You intoxicate my soul with your eyes Tho I'm certain that this heart of mine Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance, You go to my head.
