Story behind the song
A song kind of written to each other in the band. Each of us had things about the past that needed to be let go. And some things in the past reminded us of good things too; the Innocence was a band, the first band that Tom and Shawn had been in while in college, and remains the template for what is good about being in a group of guys playing music together. References to this band pop up in a number of AmCat songs, if you look for it, including the popular song Dust and Ashes. So it's OK to choose it all, so says the song.
Lyrics
Take all your instruments of fear, there's no depression here These aren't the moody minor chords that you used to play Shake off the cynical ones who say it just can't be done and bring back the Innocence, bring them back, let them play again Take on the new life, kiss the old one goodbye Hard times are meant to make us stronger, and some could last a little longer But all these trials will turn to gold, gold someday There's no regrets and no take backs, and no rewarming of cold facts It's all or nothing, and you choose it all, and that's OK Welcome the new day, kiss the old one goodbye Who knows where grace is abounding, how can you breathe when you're drowning? It's hard to say Put on the helmet and the sword, give back the things that you can't afford There's nothing good that can come from what you buried underground Take on the new life, kiss the old one goodbye
