'60s vocal group rock & roll. What those swingin' summer nights were REALLY like for some of us in 1962.
Brand new old songs of the '30s, '40s, '50s and '60s.
Story behind the song
I love songs like Wild Night Is Calling and all the Springsteen street songs. My own experience was nothing like those lyrics. I wanted to do a song in that musical style that would reflect the realities of guys like me, the intellectual dorks of the early 60s.
Lyrics
Hot summer night--some boys are having fun
Drinking and dancing and singing 'bout the summer sun
We're doing research, we're reading U.S. News
Playing pool at Harold's house--
Lord, how I hate these high school blues
We stop in at Caesar's for pizza and a Sprite
For boys like us...It's a long, long night.
Hot summer night--some boys are getting drunk
Down by Skip's Bar-B-Q, Meister Brau back in the trunk
Girls on the street won't ride in our car
We slough it off and call 'em sluts
And talk about how smart we are.
Boys with IDs are out there getting tight
For boys like us...It's a long, long night.
It's a long, long night in our teenage years
It's a long, long night, and the greatest of our fears
As we pile in the Rambler and we drive, drive, drive
"What if these really are The Best Years of our Lives?"
Hot summer night--some boys are getting laid
Greasy-haired skinny boys, boys in the auto trade
They've got their own car, they've got their trashy girl
They don't know nothing about nothing in this whole wide world
Boys like that are making out all right
For boys like us...It's a long, long night.
Hot summer night--will summer never end?
Cruisingly cruising in a car with my geeky friends
Dorks in a station wagon, Ivy League bound
Cruisin' for a bruisin' in this ugly old blue collar town
We drive thirty-five, and we stop at all the lights
For boys like us...It's a long, long night.
So it's Sartre at the I-Hop once again tonight
For boys like us...It's a long, long long hot summer night.
