From the hollow Earth to the dark forests of Portland Oregon, three futurists used skate-funk as a launching pad to put color and imagination back into hardcore rock music. Miracle Enemy's follow up album to 2002's (mE), "I Know This" was recorded in 2004 and finally released in 2008 when someone finally felt like sharing it with the rest of the world, hoping for, if not expecting a cult following. I can't think of another band in Portland at that time, that was more promiscuous with genres than Miracle Enemy. You couldn't call it rock, but it definitely rocked. The unique sound probably came from all of their self taught, do it yourself, unlike anyone ever has or will approach. That, and downright refusal to cover or even learn other songs that may contaminate one's own original essence. Throw in a waining attention span, and you could call it anything but boring. Not fitting in to any one scene, Miracle Enemy mostly played small shows with underground: punk, metal and hip hop groups, leaving the popularity contests and fashion shows to the forgettable stand-ins. Later songs like Mosey's Basement showed the bands maturity and song writing skills develop. It also shut up the people who could only compare them to Primus. The weirdest, most futuristic sounds were never recorded but there might be some videos floating around that may appear on YouTube someday. The cliche distractions that affect most bands eventually broke up even little old Miracle Enemy. A couple of the other members immediately tried to start up other projects but the chemistry and excitement of the original trio could never be duplicated. With close friends begging for a reunion, one member stayed in Oregon, one moved to Washington and another to California. Enjoy a little compressed slice of explosive imagination that is Miracle Enemy: The colorful flower that grows out of a small crack in the cold gray concrete. (mE)
