Story behind the song
This is about a patient I met in the ER. The intro is from "Shall We Dance" by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein from "The King and I" and the first guitar solo is from "The Music Box Dancer" by Frank Mills.
Lyrics
The Ballroom Dancer
Intro: Shall We Dance? (Rodgers & Hammerstein)
She was 73, she had a bum knee
And her ankles swelled and hurt when she danced.
She said, "My shoes feel tight today. Oh, by the way
It's gettin' harder to fit into my pants."
"I'm a ballroom dance instructor and I need a change of luck, you're
My last chance, I need a miracle tonight.
Oh doctor, help me, please. I'd get down on my knees,
But then I couldn't get back up to save my life."
Music Box Dancer (Frank Mills)
Well, I didn't know a mambo from a tango or a rumba,
A bolero from a lindy from a waltz.
But her story was compelling and I heard what she was tellin' me,
Her dancing days were coming to a halt.
She was a ballroom dance instructor but she couldn't cut the mustard,
Couldn't trip the light fantastic like she used to.
She needed Celebrex & Lasix just to get back to the basics
And a sympathetic soul to sing the blues to.
(Guitar solo)
This life comes at you fast, you turn around and then it's past,
It happens once and you don't get no second chance.
So do the 2-step while you can and don't forget to tip the band
And hold your partner closer to you when you dance.
All the ballroom dance instructors and the backyard brisket smokers
Have to take those final steps all on their own.
When your step's a little slower and your back's a little sorer
When your mind is steady groovin' but your body won't get movin'
When you look up and discover that the dance is almost over
You know it's time to pack it up and take it home.
