Lyrics
When I was a child on my grandpa's knee, he would tell me of his life. He fell in love with a red-haired girl who refused to be his wife. Another man had won her heart but, a married man was he. She could never have his name so it got passed on down to me. She fell in love with a man. He was an outlaw. She couldn't stand all his outlaw ways. They had a child born outta wedlock. A baby girl they named, Sweet Jesse James. Years went by and grandpa finally took her for his bride. They raised little Jesse up with dignity and pride. The little girl knew a wanted man who'd bring her gifts from time to time. Tears were shed when the man he said, "Sweet Jesse girl, you're mine." Yes, she loved a man. He was an outlaw. She couldn't stand all his outlaw ways. She was his child born outta wedlock. A baby girl they named, Sweet Jesse James. Momma kept his picture in a locket on a chain. It got passed on down to me with his spirit and his name. Grandma always takes a peek Whenever grandpa's not around. You know a picture tells a story but, it never makes a sound. Grandma always told me a true love never dies, and that she still sees Jesse James when she looks into my eyes. (Repeat Chorus)
