Story behind the song
About "I Had To Stop": (Dawn Sinclair.. Lyricist's words)
I envisaged this guy standing on a bridge watching a girl being stood up and as he was trying to decide whether to approach her, it began to pour with rain and she ran off....and took it to the logical conclusion I hope.
Fortunately for me, Mark seems to read my mind and his music reflects it exactly.
Lyrics
I Had To Stop.
Saw her standing on the tower bridge,
It was a quarter past eight and she was all alone.
I couldn't drag my eyes away from her,
Though I'd just finished work and I was heading home.
But I had to stop......(long pause) and let her steal my heart,
That’s where I stopped and lost possession of my heart.
There was a resignation in her eyes,
As if she had known he'd be a no-show date.
But though I tried to form the words to say,
There was a sudden shower and she couldn’t wait.
And I had to stop....(long pause) as she stole my heart,
That’s where I stopped as she stole away with my heart.
And it was raining, teardrops from the sky,
And it was raining, the moment passing by.
As I took shelter cursing my bad luck right then,
I wondered............... if I'd ever see the girl again.
Every time I cross the tower bridge,
A big bass drum is thumping in my chest.
I still expect to find her standing there,
It hasnt happened yet but I'm not depressed.
Co’s one day she’ll stop....(long pause) let me steal her heart,
The girl will stop and I will smile (again) as I steal my angel’s heart.
